Authentic West Coast Cuisine

The name “Muisbosskerm” comes from two Afrikaans words:

  • “Muisbos”: A hardy, indigenous coastal shrub commonly found along South Africa’s West Coast. It was traditionally used by herders (or “trekboers”) to build temporary shelters.

  • “Skerm”: Refers to a screen or shelter.

Muisbosskerm offers a traditional West Coast seafood feast in a rustic, open-air setting. The buffet-style meal, lasting 2-3 hours, features a variety of dishes, including: bokkoms, smoked snoek, mussels, crayfish (optional extra), deep fried hake and calamari, and various grilled and smoked fish, complemented by local specialties such as bean stew, curried tripe, sweet potatoes and homemade potato yeast bread, served with butter and homemade jams.

With its self-service buffet that encourages sampling a variety of seafood and local dishes, Muisbosskerm becomes more than just a meal—it’s an immersive experience that reflects the rich culinary heritage of the West Coast. Dining here feels like celebrating the local way of life, where the food, the view, and the atmosphere all combine to create a unforgettable experience.

It’s a rustic experience – you eat with a mussel shell as your fork. But a truly authentic one! All the time, you enjoy superb views over the beach and crashing waves of the Atlantic ocean. On a sunny day, there is little to beat this!
